Legends Junior Tour Space City Shootout

The Legends Junior Tour Space City Shootout will be held July 19-20 at Woodforest GC in Montgomery. Don’t miss this exciting 36-hole, nationally-ranked event. It’s one of the final chances to earn an exemption into this year’s State Junior Championship as well as one of the final points events of the 2009/10 season. The deadline to register is Wednesday, July 14 at 5:00 PM.

In addition to being ranked by Junior Golf Scoreboard, the following players will earn AJGA Exemptions:

Boys 15-18
Champion: One (1) Exemption

Girls 12-18
Champion: One (1) Exemption

Junior Golf Championships announce their reduced entry fee of $240.00 for the Southwest Junior Open presented by PGA TOUR Superstore. This $20.00 discount will expire on June 15th and the entry fee will return to $260.00 for the remainder of the registration period. The deadline to enter this event is July 5th.

2010 Junior Players Champion offered Nationwide Tour Exemption

The 2010 Junior Players Champion will receive an exemption into the inaugural Winn-Dixie Jacksonville Open Presented by Planters, the American Junior Golf Association announced Thursday. A Nationwide Tour event, the Winn-Dixie Jacksonville Open Presented by Planters will be played on the Dye’s Valley Course at TPC Sawgrass, Oct. 18-24.
The fourth annual Junior PLAYERS Championship is slated for September 2-5, and will once again be played to the course specifications of The PLAYERS Championship. With the addition of the exemption for the victor, The 2010 Junior PLAYERS Championship trophy will be more highly coveted than ever.
“This is very exciting news for our boys’ membership and an absolute thrill for the one who earns the chance to play in a Nationwide Tour event at TPC Sawgrass,” said AJGA Executive Director Stephen Hamblin.
The Nationwide Tour, which will conduct 30 events in 2010, will make its first stop in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., for the Winn-Dixie Jacksonville Open presented by Planters. The event, being held on the Dye’s Valley course at TPC Sawgrass, will showcase the future stars of the PGA TOUR, including one current AJGA member.
“We are extremely proud to offer the AJGA and the Junior PLAYERS this sought after exemption,” said Bill Hughes, General Manager of TPC Sawgrass. “We look forward to the winner of the Junior PLAYERS Championship representing the AJGA and the world of competitive junior golf with honor, pride and competitive spirit.”
The American Junior Golf Association is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to the overall growth and development of young men and women who aspire to earn college golf scholarships through competitive junior golf. The AJGA provides valuable exposure for college golf scholarships, and has an annual junior membership (boys and girls ages 12-18) of approximately 5,000 junior golfers from 49 states and 30 countries. To ensure scholarship opportunities for all junior golfers who have the skill, the AJGA created the Achieving Competitive Excellence (ACE) Grant program to provide financial assistance to young players in need.

AJGA Partners with Sun SafeTee

The American Junior Golf Association will team up with the Sun SafeTee Program throughout the 2010 season in an effort to educate young golfers about the importance of sun protection, the Association announced Thursday.

“The AJGA is proud to partner with the Sun SafeTee Program,” said Mark Oskarson, AJGA chief operations officer. “In doing so we join collegiate golf, the Golf Coaches Association of America and the National Golf Coaches Association on this important health and safety issue, working to educate the next generation of golfers.”

The Sun SafeTee Program’s mission is to teach sun protection strategies to the golf community and to provide opportunities for the early detection of skin cancer. The organization will supply educational materials highlighting the importance of sun protection at all 2010 events and will provide additional content to The AJGA Insider, the AJGA’s online magazine. Additionally, the program will provide certified dermatologists to select events, offering complimentary skin screenings for any interested AJGA parents.

“The issue of sun protection is important for all golfers and especially for junior golfers,” said Mark Wishner, president of the Sun SafeTee® program. “Since sun exposure is cumulative, adopting good sun protection strategies at an early age is critical. The Sun SafeTee Program is proud to partner with The AJGA to help deliver the message of sun protection and skin cancer prevention to AJGA members and their families.”

The Sun SafeTee Program is a 501(c)(3) non-profit sun protection and skin cancer awareness program designed specifically for the golf community. The program provides educational seminars to golf professionals and the public, distributes sun protection information and sunscreen samples at various golf events. The organization focuses on Junior and Collegiate golfers and is also a partner with the Golf Coaches Association of America and the National Golf Coaches Association. Joe Cheves Junior Invitational @ Mimosa Hills

The JCJI is an AJGA performance based entry event, as well as a Golfweek Sagarin Performance Index event. It is always held the weekend after Labor Day. The 2010 date is Sept. 11-12.

The Joe Cheves Junior Invitational is an invitation-only junior event. Champions of a select list of junior tournaments in North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee, and Virginia, as well as a set of other performance-based qualifications determine its field. Meet a criteria and earn your way into this premiere junior golf event. Invitees will compete in 36-holes of stroke play at the 1929 Donald Ross-designed Mimosa Hills Country Club layout in Morganton, N.C. Competitors will compete for the Joe Cheves Trophy. Mr. Cheves was head pro at Mimosa Hills for 30 years, and was a PGA Life Member. He’s a member of the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame, and the Carolinas PGA and Carolinas Golf Halls of Fame. A life-long supporter of junior golf, “Pro” passed away at age 89 on July 31st, 2007.

The Joe Cheves Junior is recognized as an official N.C. Junior Rankings event by the Carolinas Golf Association. Due to the strong quality of the field, the tournament has been designated an eight-multiplier. The S.C. Junior Golf Association gives the event a prestigious 6-weight in its rankings system. The JCJI is also a ranked tournament by the Junior Golf Scoreboard. Each Joe Cheves Junior Champion, and top finishers, earn deserving AJGA tournament exemptions. The JCJI is also included among the tournaments making up the Golfweek/Titleist Performance Index of events. The tournament is also part of the series of major events making up the criteria for the Carolinas Junior Player of the Year and the All-Carolinas Junior Team.
