Bettinardi BB1 Putter

Bettinardi has put on a new face to his line of milled putters.

If you like a putter with firm feel and plenty of aural feedback, there’s nothing like a one-piece milled putter. And Bob Bettinardi, on his own after several years under the Mizuno umbrella, makes some of the best.

He’s been at it for almost 20 years, and while just about every manufacturer has moved clubmaking operations to China, Bettinardi makes his putters in his Chicago-area shop, just 15 feet from his office.

Made of mild carbon steel with a satin nickel finish, the BB series has five models, each with three degrees of loft. The BB1 is a toe-heel-weighted design with soft edges and a honeycomb face that Bettinardi says is flatter, so it rolls the ball quicker with less skidding.

Bettinardi also has the Country Club (CC) series, which allows customers to etch the the name of their clubs on the sole.

The New Tour Yellow from Srixon

Golfers will do anything for a slight edge, like wearing pendants that claim to “tune” your body’s energy for lower scores, so why not balls that might assert a calming influence at address?

The key to the Srixon Z-Star Tour Yellow ball is its greenish tint, since psychological studies have shown that green has a soothing effect on people. It’s why talk show guests wait in a “green room” and hospitals paint their walls light green. Studies have also shown that yellow is the most visual color in the spectrum, which can be especially helpful in looking for a lost ball (not that I would know anything about that, of course).

But this isn’t some low-priced gimmick. The Z-Star line, which also includes the Z-Star X Tour Yellow for players with higher swing speeds, is Srixon’s flagship, urethane-covered premium ball. Staff pros like Vijay Singh, Jim Furyk and Tim Clark have already put the balls into play (they hit stores April 1). Both models also feature Srixon’s new “Energetic Gradient Growth” core technology for more ball speed, higher launch and lower spin, and 324 large seamless dimples to reduce wind resistance.

Of course, colored golf balls are nothing new. Perhaps the most famous is the orange Wilson ProStaff Jerry Pate used to win the 1982 Players Championship but the orange orb never caught on.

Maybe yellow will. Tennis made the switch. Why not golf?

Mike Weir: Stack & Tilt PGA Tour Player

Mike Weir’s first PGA Tour win came at the 1999 Air Canada Championship in Surrey, British Columbia. On April 13, 2003, Mike Weir won the prestigious Masters Tournament at Augusta, Georgia, one of the four Major tournaments in men’s golf. He is the first Canadian male ever to win a professional major championship.

Mike Weir worked with Andy Plummer and Mike Bennett on a new swing that showed some positive results (two top tens, including a tie for eighth at the Open Championship. Despite his team losing the 2007 Presidents Cup, Weir did go on to beat current number one Tiger Woods in a heated match. When asked, Weir enthusiastically stated, “When I look back on my career, this may be even more special than winning the Masters.”

The Stack & Tilt Golf Swing is the Hottest Swing on the PGA Tour.

Stack & Tilt: Review DVD 2

Those of us who love to break down the golf swing piece by piece and yes over analysis every aspect of the swing can appreciate this video. Be sure and drink one of those energy drinks before you begin or you may get a good nap like I did. Don’t get me wrong, there is plenty of great material but it is kind of like going through Statistics class in college. I will say that the Stack & Tilt is a great swing for junior golfers.

All that being said, once you have gained some experience and confidence with the swing it will be very helpful in quoting Andy, “layering in more and more sophistication” into the swing. Sophistication is a good choice of words to describe the concepts discussed.

Mike and Andy go more extensively into why they believe that the biggest problem for most amateurs is that the bottom of the swing is behind the placement of the ball in the stance. This then is the cause of both thin and fat shots. They go into detail of how you can have both thin and fat shots occurring from the same flaw.

They also explain further in detail their belief in the true fundamentals of the golf swing.

Pros:

This video showcases Andy and Mike‘s heavy background in the science behind the golf swing. They go to extraordinary lengths to give the viewer the ability to gradually improve through accurate diagnosis of their swing flaws.

Cons:

As terrific as it is to see, this high level of sophistication is not for the uninitiated or those suffering from short attention spans. It will require your attention. Most people know very little about some of the high level concepts discussed on this DVD. Seriously, if you intent to watch this DVD all the way through then be sure and drink lots of caffeine.

Stack And Tilt Swing Review-DVD 1

PGA Tour player Mike Weir is one of over 30 tour players using the Stack & Tilt swing. Below is my review of the first DVD in a 4 DVD Series.

This video begins with Andy and Mike giving the user some ideas about what to expect from the progression of the videos. Andy and MIke also introduce the viewer to their use of “Catalogs” which are photos of past and present PGA Tour along with average amateur players being shown in the position they are describing and “Elements” which trace variations of each position.

As the chapters progress, Andy and Mike do a an excellent job of taking you through the swing simplifying the Stack & Tilt method to the point that watching the first DVD would be sufficient to begin going out and practicing the swing. However, the most interesting and fascinating chapters of the video by far are Chapters 7-9 were Andy and Mike summarize the “Stack And Tilt™ Fundamentals of golf.”

The traditional fundamentals in golf are related to the grip, the stance, the posture, the alignment, ball position and tempo. Andy and Mike counter with the notion that if these fundamentals are true, how is it possible that so many of the game’s great champions have virtually nothing in common in any of these areas? They argue, quite compellingly, that they do not. Rather, they pose the question, “What do all the great players have in common?”

In the Stack & Tilt method the true fundamentals of golf are:

The ability to strike the ground in the same spot everytime (making your divot in front of the ball).

The ability to hit the ball with enough power to play the course in a reasonable amount of shots.

The ability to reliably control the curvature of the ball.

Pros:

This video gives the viewer the ability to get a “quick start” in the Stack And Tilt™ Swing. The need to watch videos 2 – 4 are not necessary to begin using the swing.

Cons:

The video was shot on a cloudy and windy day. The video quality could have been better if shot in a controlled setting.

Conclusion:

DVD One alone is worth the entire price of the course. DVD 2 & 3 are for the more advanced players as I will get into in their review down the fairway. DVD Four is on the short game and you will be excited to see my review on it. Andy and Mike do an outstanding job directly answering the question of what great players do alike, and not what they do differently. Only by understanding what they have in common can we make accurate judgements about what is useful information or not.
