“The golf course set up was significantly harder today,” head coach Scott Lieberwirth said. “The tees were back and the pin locations were much harder. You add in the wind and the pressure of being in the hunt in the final round, it was a tough day of golf. I thought Justin Knauber was on his way to a tough day but he pulled it together and scored for us and that was huge. When you have a player like Tim Madigan, shooting that kind of score in these conditions it is hard to imagine. It was the best performance of his career. I’m proud of all these guys. We didn’t have the greatest year and throughout the spring we struggled. We didn’t get down on ourselves and kept our heads up. It was a great day for the Aggies.”

“I want to thank the players from the 2004, 2006, 2008 and 2009 teams as they helped start a tradition for this program and these young men are carrying that tradition out right now,” Lieberwirth said. “I’m really happy and proud of the way we hung in and competed today.”

Junior Tim Madigan earned first team all-WAC honors and WAC Player of the Year as teammates Justin Shin and Gaston De La Torre was picked as a second team all-WAC selections. Shin was also named the WAC Freshman of the Year, an honor that Madigan won back in 2008.

Madigan won the 2010 WAC Championships individual title with a three round score of 14-under par, 202 (64-68-70). He carded a final round score of 2-under par, 70. The next closes player in the field was Mark Hubbard of San Jose State and Scott Smith of Nevada at 6-under par.

“Basically what I told myself was relax,” Madigan said. “I knew I could make birdies out here and after I shot the 64 in round one coach told me to just be patient out there and that is what I did. The first round was just out of the blue, a round that only happens every so often when everything is going right. It was a very special day. The last two rounds I just played solid. I minimized my mistakes and took advantage when I could.”

“I couldn’t be more proud of the team. We didn’t have the best of seasons coming into this tournament but we stayed strong and ever guy contributed which was awesome.”

Shin fired a second round score of 1-over par, 73, finishing tied for fourth overall with a three round score of 3-under par, 213 (71-69-73). De La Torre struggled in round three carding a 15-over par, 87. He finished tied for 28th overall at 11-over par, 227 (72-68-87).

Senior Ryan Word finished the championship at 4-over par, 220 (76-69-75), tying for 16th overall. In his final round of play, Word shot a 3-over par, 75. Freshman Justin Knauber fired a 4-over par, 76 in the final round, placing him tied for 28th overall with a three round score of 11-over par, 227 (78-73-76).

Following NM State in the team scoring was Nevada (-4), San Jose State (-4), Idaho (+11), Louisiana Tech (+12), Fresno State (+14), Boise State (+40), Utah State (+46) and Hawai’i (+54).

NM State now moves on to the NCAA Regional Tournament on May 20-22. The Aggies will find out where they will be competing next Monday, May 10th.

After being left out of the East and Central regional sites, Iowa State’s hopes started to fall again this year. Things continued to look grim as team after team was named to the West Regional field, and still no mention of the Cyclones.

“It was pretty nerve-racking to wait that long,” said Martens, who had guessed Iowa State would be placed in the Central Regional.

The good news finally came with only seven teams left to be called, four of which had already earned a regional ticket via an automatic qualifying spot.

When Iowa State was named the 18th-seeded team in the West Regional, the Cyclones erupted in cheers and high fives, then breathed a collective sigh of relief.

This spring not only marks Martens’ first trip to regionals with Iowa State, but it’s also the first year she’ll graduate one of her own recruiting classes. Now in her sixth year as head coach – and with a contract extension through 2015 – Martens is seeing her hard work pay off. The Cyclones not only shook the postseason monkey off their backs, but also came in fourth at the Big 12 Championship, their best finish in history.

Ranked No. 53 in the Golfweek/Sagarin College Rankings, Iowa State needed that solid conference performance to secure its regional bid. The team set a goal of breaking 300 in each round of the Big 12s. After opening the week on the number, the Cyclones finished with rounds of 305 and 301.

“You always could have done better, but we felt like we went out and played solid every day,” Martens said. “We felt like we left it on the golf course.”

Martens had a feeling this could be the team to break the postseason pattern after watching her players buckle down and work like never before this season. The Cyclones had two top-3 finishes and at one point reached the top 25 in the Golfweek/Sagarin College Rankings.

For senior captain Pennapa Pulsawath, a regional bid couldn’t have come at a better time. This is her last hurrah with the Cyclones, and a postseason appearance has been on her mind since freshman year. Pulsawath, who was named to the All-Big 12 Conference team, also feels better about walking away from the team knowing that the upcoming regional trip will inspire the underclassmen to practice even harder next year.

“I truly believe that next year is going to be good for them, too, because we’re going to have another good player coming in next year (Abbie Horan), so it’s going to be exciting to see how much they’re going to improve and how far they’re going to get,” she said.

The pressure has lifted considerably now for Pulsawath and her team as they prepare for the spot they earned in the West Regional.

“Golf is just a game and we just try our best and get the most out of it, and we’ll see what we can get from there,” she said. “If we qualify for nationals, it’s going to be great for us. If not, there’s nothing we can do about it because we’re going to do our best out there.”

But the Illini snuck away instead.

The Illinois, No. 8 in the Golfweek/Sagarin College Rankings, started the day with a 16-shot lead and hung on to a three-shot, wire-to-wire victory over 55th-ranked Iowa.

The Illini shot a final-round 11-over 295 for a four-round total of 21-over 1,157, placing three individuals in the top 10. Iowa, ensuring their selection Monday to the NCAA regionals, closed in 2-under 282 for a 1,160 total, three shots ahead of third-place Northwestern.

It was Illinois’ sixth victory of the year, and fourth in just over the last month. The Illini won the FAU Spring Break Championship by 18 shots March 28, the Crooked Stick Invitational by 15 shots April 20 and the Boilermaker Invitational by 13 shots April 25.

Northwestern junior David Lipsky made three consecutive birdies on the back nine and shot a final-round even-par 71 to finish at 3-under 281 and win the individual title by two shots over Michigan’s Matt Thompson (73), who was tied with Lipsky entering the day. Iowa’ Barrett Kelpin (72) finished another shot back in third.

“I put myself in chance to win a couple of tournaments earlier in the year, but I didn’t get the wins,” Lipsky, No. 146 in the Golfweek/Sagarin Rankings, said of his second career title. “I learned from those and I’m pretty happy those experiences helped me win this one.”

Leading Illinois was sophomore Luke Guthrie, who shot a final-round 71 and finished fourth, five shots back of Lipsky. Senior Zack Barlow (78) tied for seventh and junior Chris DeForest (72), who had won the individual title in three of his last four events, tied for 10th. Scott Langley, at No. 24 the highest-ranked Illinois player in the Golfweek/Sagarin College Rankings, struggled to a final-round 80 and finished tied for 24th.

NCAA regional bids will be announced May 10 for play May 20-22 at six sites: Alpharetta, Ga.; Bryan, Texas; New Haven, Conn.; Notre Dame, Ind.; Santee, Calif.; and Bremerton, Wash.

The NCAA Championship is June 1-6 at The Honors Course in Chattanooga, Tenn.

UCF, No. 52 in the Golfweek/Sagarin College Rankings, shot 6-under 858 for an 18-stroke victory. Rice and Southern Miss tied for second at 876.

“I don’t know what it is about this place,” said senior Simon Ward, the 2009 C-USA champion who matched par each day for a 216 total and sixth place. “I don’t know if it’s the greens. We must just like the air up here.”

Rice’s Christopher Brown shot 70-69-70 for a 7-under 209 and five-shot victory to earn an automatic bid to the NCAA regional. UCF teammates Brad Schneider (73), Nuno Henriques (66) and Connor Arendell (67) tied for second at 2-under 214 with Southern Mississippi’s Wes Carter (67).

“(RedTail) just fits our eye,” Arendell said. “We were all prepared, and we knew we needed to win.”

The Knights, who entered the C-USA tournament with a 61-67-2 record, needed at least a top-three finish to avoid falling victim to the “.500 rule’’ and secure a postseason berth.

A wire-to-wire victory erased any doubt.

Bryce Wallor, UCF’s first-year coach, stressed a streamlined mental approach on the golf course.

“They practiced so much and so hard that they ended up getting down on themselves,” Wallor said. “We really worked on getting negative thoughts out of our heads. You can’t have a positive and a negative thought going at the same time. ‘One thought per second.’ ’’

There was plenty of drama for the Knights on their adopted home course, which is about an hour from their east Orlando campus.

Schneider withstood a four-putt triple bogey on the par-4 10th hole to post his third-round 73. In a second-round 68, he made eagles on the par-5 seventh and 12th holes, which he played 6 under combined for the three rounds.

After back-to-back 74s, Henriques shot a tournament-best 66 – with birdies on the first two and last two holes – in the final round.

Arendell, a sophomore transfer from Louisville, posted a third-round 67 to land his first top-5 college finish.
