How to get a GOLF Scholarship and PLAY in College: Part 9
This is a continuation of “Schedule of Tournaments”. As discussed last week this is a difficult subject since each junior golfer is at a different stage of their game. There is no one-way to prepare a Schedule of Tournaments. This week we will be talking about the Mid-Level to Advanced juniors.
Mid-Level juniors with tournament experience: Okay, your junior has been playing tournament golf for at least one to two years oand has played in at least 10 one-day tournaments with good success. It is very important that your junior achieve success in each level before moving them up in difficulty. Now, it is time to begin playing the multi-day tournaments. Be sure that the tournaments you choose have at least a JGS ranking. The PGA regional tours, like the North Texas PGA have several of these tournaments available and there are also many regional independent tournaments that will fall into these criteria. The Starburst in Waco, TX and the Texas/Oklahoma in Wichita Falls, TX are two of the largest independent tournaments that are open to a first come first serve type registration. Go to Best Independent Tournaments and click on their site for registration dates. If you email About Junior Golf, we will help you in your search for these events in your region.
Don’t be to discouraged if you do not play well at first. Remember that the ranking systems are on a 12 month rolling schedule. If you play poorly in a couple of tournaments and your ranking is not were you want it to be those poor scores will begin to fall off in 12 months. So, keep playing and as you score better your ranking will begin to climb up the ladder. It is important to note that if you are not playing well don’t hesitate to go back to the one day/non ranked tournaments until you begin to play better. That way you can regain your confidence and then get back to improving your ranking.
Advanced: If your junior golfer is doing well in the events mentioned above then it is time to take them to the next level and your schedule should begin to be geared for achieving maximum ranking. Why? Well, now you are in the world of invitations. Most of the Best Independent Tournaments listed on About Junior Golf are by invitation only or by rankings qualifications. This means if you are ranked high enough you will be invited to these tournaments. Otherwise you may make application to play in them and either approved or denied based on the quality of field that has applied to play. The AJGA also has various invitation only tournaments. Until then get into a tour from the Best Junior Golf Tours list. Select tournaments that have a Golfweek or Polo(AJGA) ranking. These will have the best “Strength of Field” that will drive your ranking up the ladder.
Check back next week for the criteria to maximize your ranking.
Now go make some birdies!
