I Need More Backspin Coach

One of my students today wanted to know the magic behind hitting a ball with a lot of back spin. I told him that it was not that important right now and that we needed to move on with the lesson. Focus on the current drill that we were working on.

He was persistant and brought it up after almost every ball he hit. Ok, ok, ok! Enough is enough.

I asked him how many greens do you hit during a round. His response was “I don’t know.” I said, “didn’t you play today” and he replied ” yes.”  Ok, lets walk back through your round hole by hole and tell me where your approach shot ended up. We went hole by hole and he added up all the green he hit and then I asked him how many of those greens were you past the hole. He quickly said “none.”  ”Perfect!”  ”You don’t need more back spin, you have to much already.”

The point is a simple one. Most junior golfer under club for their approach shots. They always seem to choose a club that requires a perfect shot to get to the hole and as with this student they almost always end up short of the hole.

Junior golfer need to focus on using the proper club to get to the hole. Then if you begin to fly the ball to the green and it doesn’t hold, then you might need to work on spinning the ball. More than likely you will be making a proper swing and the club face will do it’s job and put just enough spin on the ball to make it hit once and do that little dance that you are looking for and can not find.

Use the right club, swing consistently and the ball will spin. Until then, focus on making consistent golf swings.
